Product Description

Purple Kohlrabi Microgreen Seeds

Purple Kohlrabi is a unique cultivar of the kohlrabi plant, recognized by its deep purple exterior and crisp, pale flesh inside. A member of the Brassica family, it’s closely related to broccoli, cabbage, and Brussels sprouts. This bulbous vegetable grows above ground and boasts a mildly sweet and peppery flavor, often compared to that of turnips and radishes. Its texture is crunchy, akin to a broccoli stem or an apple, making it ideal for both raw and cooked consumption. Eaten raw, it can be sliced into salads or used as sticks for dips. When cooked, its flavor mellows and can be steamed, roasted, or stir-fried. In addition to its unique taste and versatility in the kitchen, purple kohlrabi is nutritionally rich. It’s a great source of vitamin C, dietary fiber, and antioxidants, the latter of which gives it its deep purple hue. This vegetable not only adds color and crunch to dishes but also a myriad of health benefits, making it a worthwhile addition to diverse culinary dishes.

Kohlrabi microgreens

Kohlrabi microgreens are the young seedlings of the kohlrabi plant, harvested just after the cotyledon leaves have developed. Renowned for their delicate texture and mildly peppery flavor, these microgreens are a gourmet addition to salads, sandwiches, and garnishes. Aesthetically pleasing with their vibrant green stems and leaves, kohlrabi microgreens are not just culinary delights but also nutritionally dense. Packed with vitamins like C and K, minerals, and beneficial plant compounds, they offer a condensed nutritional profile that exceeds that of their mature counterparts. Additionally, they are easy to cultivate indoors, requiring minimal space and resources, making them a popular choice for urban growers and culinary enthusiasts.

Growing Kohlrabi Microgreens in a 1020 Tray using Bottom Watering:

  1. Preparation: Begin with a clean 1020 tray with drainage holes. Additionally, prepare a second tray without holes to serve as a water reservoir.
  2. Medium: Fill the tray with 1-2 inches of organic potting mix or coconut coir.
  3. Sowing: Evenly distribute kohlrabi seeds (28 grams) across the medium, ensuring no overcrowding.
  4. Covering: Gently press the seeds into the medium and cover with another tray or a humidity dome to retain moisture.
  5. Watering: Instead of misting, add water to the bottom tray (the one without holes). Place the seeded tray inside this bottom tray. The medium will absorb water from below, encouraging deep root growth.
  6. Germination: Position the tray in a dark, warm spot. Expect germination within 3-5 days.
  7. Light: Once seeds have sprouted, relocate the tray to a well-lit area, preferably under grow lights for 12-16 hours daily.
  8. Growth: Check the bottom tray periodically and add water as needed to ensure consistent moisture. Refrain from overwatering; the medium should be moist, not soggy.
  9. Harvest: In 10-14 days, the microgreens should be ready. With clean scissors, cut the microgreens just above the soil level. Rinse delicately and enjoy immediately for optimum taste and nutrition.
